There are 631 historic, cultural arts, natural and archaeological monuments both of the state and municipal importance. Several architectural monuments date back to the Middle Ages.
There are a number of Churches constructed from wood, Mykolay Church (1604) is the oldest. In 1992 it was destroyed in a fire, but since then it has been completely restored.
There is the Voznesenska church constructed at the end of the 17th century, Assumption church (1715), St. Ipyrydon Church (1715) and Cathedral of the Virgin Mary Nativity (1767) in the city.
At the beginning of the 20th century many famous buildings were constructed in Chernivtsi such as city hall, the post office, metropolitans residence, Armenian church, dramatic theatre, Justice Palace and the railway station. A masterpiece of the famous architect Jozeph Hlavka (the former residence of Bukovyna metropolitans) is rightly considered to be the most beautiful architectural treasure. Nowadays it is used as the Chernivtsi National University, named after Yuriy Fedkovych who is interred in it and is on the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
